Chelsea did well to keep holding off extremely talented defender Levi Colwill this summer. Despite Brighton insisting on bringing the player back after a loan spell and Liverpool snooping around, the English international ended up putting pen to paper on a new contract at Chelsea. Regarded as one of the best under-21 defenders in world football, the Blues have a gem in their hands with Colwill.

He’s returned to Stamford Bridge as a regular under Mauricio Pochettino, having started every game so far for Chelsea. Despite his preferred position being that of a centre-back, Colwill has often drifted out wide and acted as a left-back this season.

After making headlines for his role in Huddersfield Town’s 21-22 Championship side, which nearly won promotion, Colwill made the step up to the Premier League last season on loan with Brighton. Initially failing to stay fit and earn a spot in the starting line-up, 2023 was a different case for Levi Colwill. Under the guidance of Roberto De Zerbi, Colwill began picking up regular starts for Brighton, which went on to have their best finish in the Premier League, sixth.

Levi Colwill has been nominated as a finalist for this year’s Golden Boy Award. Curated by European newspapers, the award is given to the most impressive under-21 talent in world football. With the roles he played with both Brighton and Chelsea, Colwill should be among the players with the most votes for the award. While it feels like Jude Bellingham is a nail-on to win the award, his fellow Englishman Colwill should feel he’s one of the better nominees. Five Premier League sides have had players win the Golden Boy Award, but not Chelsea to date.

Other Premier League players named finalists are Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth), Evan Ferguson (Brighton and Hove Albion) and Rasmus Hojlund (Manchester United).
