West Ham United got off to a good start to life in the Europa League last night. Playing against Backa Topola, they were always the favourites going into the game. However, going a goal down left West Ham fans unnerved. Fear not, though, as they secured three points in the end.

One player who was key to the comeback was new signing Mohamed Kudus. The Ghana international scored a goal for the Hammers which continued David Moyes’ win streak in Europe. However, speaking after the game, Moyes was surprisingly pessimistic about Kudus’ display.

"“I thought [Kudus] started the game really well and the team was playing well in the opening 20 minutes. He faded away, but in the end he came up with one and maybe two goals, I’m being told, so I’m really, really pleased for him. He’s made a good start, we like him a lot and we’ll edge him in when we get the opportunities in the right moments to do so. I’m pleased because we needed someone to come up with goals tonight and he was the one who did it.” – David Moyes (via WHUFC)"

It’s surprising to see the Scottish manager downplay the hype about Kudus. Of course, he did give him his credit which was due. However, to claim that he still needs time to adjust and he’ll get the opportunities “in the right moments”, is quite surprising.

Of course, it’s probably just a case of reading between the lines when the lines are only perceived. As an expert of the game, I’m sure Moyes didn’t mean to downplay the hype, as the best coming from his players is something that he expects.

West Ham United now face Liverpool in the Premier League this weekend. It’s going from tough to tougher for Moyes as he was unlucky not to see out the win against champions West Ham. Certainly, the Hammers look like one of the best contenders in the Premier League this season so they’ll be up for this fixture against Liverpool.
