Since his sacking, former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave a full-length interview to The Athletic where he shed light on his sacking.
Manchester United finished second in the Premier League table just behind Manchester City the season before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked as the Man United manager. His last match at Vicarage Road was absolute carnage for Man Utd as they were defeated by Watford 4-1.
Prior to that game, United were humiliated at Old Trafford where they lost 5-0 against their biggest rivals, Liverpool. Even Liverpool fans were signing Ole’s at the wheel. Rival fans were deeply saddened when Man Utd decided to part ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a club legend who was given the reigns of probably the biggest English football club.
Solskjaer had lost the dressing room prior to that game as players lost faith in their manager. Speaking about that time, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed to The Athletic’s Andy Mitten;
"“Nobody told me, but I knew at half-time against Watford,” he says. “We didn’t look like a Man United team; the players weren’t running for each other. At half-time, I told the players it was probably going to be the last time we worked together and to play with pride. We almost turned it around, until Harry Maguire got sent off.”"
Solskjaer also spoke about the ‘negativity’ when he was booed by Man Utd fans away to Watford. Bruno Fernandes came to support his manager but fans were angry. The ex-Man United manager knew that lost the ‘backing’ of United fans. He also knew at that time his time at Manchester United was ‘finished’.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will always be a club legend for Manchester United. Nobody will forget that last-minute goal against Bayern that completed United’s treble. However, his managerial stint will be one to forget in the long and glorious history of the Red Devils.
