Manchester United, so soon after signing Andre Onana, find themselves in the transfer market again to sign another Premier League worthy goalkeeper. But don’t get it twisted, they aren’t after a replacement for Onana, but a backup option instead.
While they hope that Andre Onana doesn’t become injured or suspended, they must prepare for the worst in case. Premier League contenders Arsenal and Manchester City both have top quality options between the sticks and on the bench, so it’s the path to follow.
With Dean Henderson likely to leave the club, it’s important that before the window closes, a new goalkeeper is signed. However, since deadline day is so close, there will be a lot of competition.
Manchester United face competition from Nottingham Forest
Indeed, according to the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are already facing competition from their Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest. Romano claims the East Midlands based club has submitted their opening €9m bid to sign Odisseas Vlachodimos from Benfica. While this isn’t enough, talks continue between the two clubs.
Admittedly, from United’s perspective, Odisseas Vlachodimos is the backup option. As things stand, Erik ten Hag would prefer to sign Altir Bayindir instead. However, he has quite the habit of procrastinating his transfer plans, so he may want to hurry to sign either of his two options.
Manchester United sit eighth in the Premier League table, after winning two of their opening games and losing the other. Onana has made some mistakes early into his Old Trafford career, but this is to be expected during his transition period.
