Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is known to be quite ruthless. If there is a player who doesn’t fit his system, he won’t start. Of course, they’ll be given chances to prove him wrong but if he’s then proven right, they’ll likely be sold.

However, one player who seems to go against that strategy is Harry Maguire. It’s difficult to understand the relationship between Maguire and Erik ten Hag. The boss has defended him many times in the past and continues to do so, yet his captaincy was stripped and he hardly starts for United anymore.

Therefore, fans are beginning to question why Maguire hasn’t been sold this summer. If there’s ever been a time to sign the defender who was signed in 2019 for £80m, it’s now. Obviously, there’ll be a financial loss since not even Saudi clubs would pay half of that £80m fee, but he should be sold regardless.

Manchester United: Erik ten Hag wants to KEEP Harry Maguire

According to talkSPORT, though, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is keen to keep the former captain for the upcoming season. Or at least until January. This is after West Ham have tried but failed to sign him, with United set to reject the latest bid from the Hammers.

I must admit, this is probably the most confusing choice which Ten Hag has made. It’s not like he needs to keep Maguire as if anything, he holds the defence back. In times like this, sentimentality is the last thing you want from your manager. Instead, Ten Hag needs to continue his ruthless nature by selling Maguire, even with the financial loss.

Admittedly, though, Ten Hag could be considering the upcoming Champions League campaign. Maguire has experience in big matches, but he’ll more be used in the cases of squad rotation. Let’s see his role this season.
