Manchester United wanted to offload many players this summer. It was a part of Erik ten Hag’s process. He wanted to trim the fat from United’s squad. However, the outgoings at Man United this season have not panned out the way it was envisioned. Man Utd couldn’t sell Scott McTominay, Donny Van De Beek, Brandon Williams, and joining that list is the former Man Utd club captain, Harry Maguire. Yes, he was linked to West Ham who bid for him and Manchester United agreed the fee. But now, West Ham is backing away from this deal.

What Happened between Manchester United and West Ham

To understand what happened between Manchester United and West Ham, you need to understand how a transfer of a player from one club to another happens. First of all, a club has to agree personal terms with a player. After that, the club needs to agree a fee with the player’s club. Finally, the club announces the transfer of the player. For the Harry Maguire to West Ham deal, the first part which is personal terms agreement with the player never took place.

Harry Maguire is on £190,000 per week salary. West Ham was offering £120,000 per week. He also wanted a payout from Man Utd which was around £15m. So, even after Man United agreed a fee of £30m for Harry Maguire with West Ham, the deal fell through. According to Fabrizio Romano, West Ham didn’t receive a green light from Manchester United for the transfer of Harry Maguire.

What’s Next for Harry Maguire and Manchester United?

Harry Maguire has gone down the pecking order at Manchester United. He is now the fourth-choice centre-back for United.  Unless a couple of Man Utd centre-backs get injured, he will not be getting game time which puts severe doubts to his England career. Gareth Southgate, the England manager, has mentioned that Maguire needs to get regular game time for Manchester United if he wants to get into the England squad. He now puts his England career at a huge risk.

For Manchester United, the search for another centre-back before the end of the transfer window virtually ends here. Also, the chances of any more incomings are now in doubt. Manchester United are still looking to sell players to fund a midfielder along with a left-back. Do you think United can sign another player before this Friday’s transfer deadline day?
