The age-old rivalry is making a comeback within the next week. Liverpool and Manchester United are set to lock horns which is reminiscent of times gone by. Except this time, the competition won’t be on the pitch, but instead in the transfer window.

Both teams have been criticised for not doing enough in the transfer market and both teams are in dire need of signing a new midfielder before the window comes to a close. Therefore, they were bound to be drawn to the same player.

Liverpool rival Manchester United for the signing of Ryan Gravenberch

According to a report from The Mirror, both Manchester United and Liverpool would like to sign Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich. The 21-year-old Netherlands international is due a move away from Bavaria this summer, given his discomfort and displacement from the starting XI. For the sake of his development, he must move somewhere he is guaranteed gametime.

Given the lack of midfield options at Liverpool, they would be his best shout. Jurgen Klopp is in dire need of midfield appointments, particularly after Alexis Mac Allister picked up a red card in the most recent match against Bournemouth.

Given that Liverpool will play in the Europa League this season, Klopp is given the freedom to rotate his squad more freely than he has in previous seasons with the Champions League. Although, Gravenberch would much prefer to fight for a place in the starting eleven, where he is more than capable of being.

Under Jurgen Klopp, Gravenberch’s development is more guaranteed than it is under Thomas Tuchel. While both are great managers in their own right, Klopp is able to allocate more time to help the 21-year-old adapt his game given the lack of midfield options at Anfield Stadium.

Although, Liverpool must be wary of the competition from Manchester United, as the pull-factor or working under his countryman Erik ten Hag and playing in the Champions League could sway the midfielder.
