Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings injury

Tyrone Mings suffered a serious knee injury on Saturday evening. The England international and Aston Villa defender, now 30, will have to undergo surgery and will be out for an extended period of time.

Aston Villa was full of optimism coming into this season after a second half to last year that saw them only bettered by Manchester City in points won. This preseason they have prepared well, and the manager Unai Emery has the midlands side looking like top-six contenders.

The first match of this season had Aston Villa away at Newcastle United, a team that also has serious ambition this term, having added Champions League football to their calendar. With two attack-minded teams on display, it was billed as a must-watch. And it didn’t disappoint. From the off, there were goals, and the eventual score, 5-1 in the home team’s favour, was fully deserved. It could have been different though, had Mings not gone off on the half-hour mark. Having only missed 12 games since signing for Aston Villa in 2019, the distressed look on Ming’s face let everyone know the injury was a bad one.

Although further prognosis by the club has revealed the full detail in a club statement on Monday. “Aston Villa can confirm that Tyrone Mings has sustained a significant knee injury.

"The club said in a statement on Monday: “Aston Villa can confirm that Tyrone Mings has sustained a significant knee injury. The England international was stretchered off from the field after damaging his knee during the first half of Villa’s match at Newcastle United on Saturday. The defender has undergone scans and will, unfortunately, require surgery ahead of a lengthy rehabilitation process.”"

This is a severe blow to Emery’s plans and comes off the back of losing Emi Buendia for an estimated eight months after damaging knee ligaments in training.
