As The Top Flight has covered earlier, it looked as though Liverpool was set on signing Moises Caicedo, but now it is expected he will hold out for his move to Chelsea. This all unfolded after Chelsea had bid for Liverpool target Romeo Lavia who has been left in the back seat for this Moises Caicedo transfer saga. Now there are reports that suggest Chelsea may sign both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, leaving Chelsea desperate to search for another midfield target.
Chelsea and Southampton reportedly reach an agreement for Romeo Lavia
Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that Chelsea has reached an agreement with Southampton to sign Romeo Lavia for £50m. It is believed a contract is in place should things be finalized. Tavolieri believes that Lavia has already said his goodbyes to teammates at Southampton. Sacha says a last-minute bid from Liverpool cannot be ruled out, though. The situation reads much like the Moises Caicedo one except the other way around. Chelsea have reportedly found an agreement, but Liverpool could still hijack the deal.
Regardless of who Lavia ultimately signs for, he has surely played his last for Southampton. The 2004-born midfielder only joined the south-coast club last summer from Manchester City’s academy. City has a sell-on percentage on any deal, but they also have £40m buy-back clause that is not active until 2024. At this point, though, there’s a less than zero percent chance that it will ever be activated.
Chelsea landing both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia would be a massive coup for Todd Boehly’s side. Those two could theoretically line up with Enzo Fernandez in the midfield in what will be special to watch, not just for Chelsea fans but also neutrals. As we have clearly seen in the last few days, nothing is done until it is officially announced by the clubs.
