Three Premier League players who need to have bounce back seasons
By Evan Curnew
Harry Maguire (Manchester United)
If any player could use a bounce-back season, it is Harry Maguire. The English defender has lost his captaincy at Manchester United and sees himself as a backup to Raphael Varane in Erik ten Hag’s plans. Maguire’s £80m move to United in 2019 from Leicester City has not been worth the money. While some criticism is absolutely deserved, Maguire has been abused beyond belief by both United and football fans for his play over the seasons for United. Whether it is a thing of confidence or not, Maguire has been on the wrong end of a lot of bad plays that have resulted in goals. As such, he’s found himself no longer a starter at Manchester United.
What has been a bit puzzling is that Maguire has always performed well for the England National Team under Gareth Southgate. He absolutely has the qualities of a strong defender, but they have not shown enough at Old Trafford.
This upcoming season, it’ll be Harry Maguire’s job to fight for starting minutes again and be a valuable player in the eyes of Erik ten Hag. With Champions League football on the menu, he will get time to showcase that he has turned a page.
There is a twist, though. As The Top Flight has covered, West Ham really wants to sign Harry Maguire, and there is absolutely a chance he plays for David Moyes sometime this season. If he is to move, it could be an even better environment for Harry Maguire to show the centre-back he can be. He would very likely play large minutes for West Ham, who have Europa League matches.
