Manchester United have sorted out their goalkeeper and striker problem by signing Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund, respectively. The Red Devils’ next moves will likely depend on the status of players who could be potentially leaving. As The Top Flight has covered, United players Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire have both been subject to bids from West Ham United. Should either of those players leave, it is expected reinforcements will come in those positions. For Harry Maguire in particular, the club has already identified his replacement.
Manchester United has contact with Nice over Jean-Clair Todibo deal
Fabrizio Romano reports that Manchester United has contacted Nice to enquire about what a deal for Jean-Clair Todibo could look like. United will only pursue a transfer if Maguire leaves, but that is now looking more likely, signalling that the Frenchman could be heading to Old Trafford. Romano has gone so far as to call Todibo a “top target” for Manchester United.
Born in French Guiana, Todibo was considered a wonderkid during his time at Ligue 1 side Toulouse. He joined Spanish giants Barcelona in February 2019, but his time in the Catalan capital was not long. Todibo’s first loan away from Barcelona was to Schalke, which prompted German footballing legend Lothar Matthaus to describe the defender as “incredibly calm.” In October 2020, Todibo joined Benfica on loan but had his loan terminated early. That next January, he joined Nice on loan, permanently staying for three seasons.
Still just 23 years old, Todibo could be the right centre-back for the future at Manchester United. Todibo is well regarded as a very good passer of the ball and extremely mobile for a 6’3″ defender. He only signed a new contract with OGC Nice in the Fall of 2022, meaning Manchester United will have to pay a significant price for Todibo. Barcelona retains a sell-on percentage as well which could factor into negotiations.
