Chelsea view young defender as ‘sellable’ and slap a price tag on him

Chelsea is set to sign Axel Disasi from AS Monaco very soon. This move will add a right-sided centre-back to Chelsea’s backline, which was much needed in light of Wesley Fofana’s injury. While the move provided some extra security at that position, Disasi’s transfer will also signal an outgoing at the back. Trevoh Chalobah, a Cobham academy product, could be seeing his days at Chelsea come to an end.
He has been a regularly used player for the past two seasons but now sees himself as a surplus under Mauricio Pochettino. The Athletic is reporting that internally, Chelsea views Trevoh Chalobah as a ‘sellable player,’ and his playtime during this pre-season is not indicative of being rated by Pochettino. Furthermore, it is believed that Serie A side Inter had poked around on signing him, but Chalobah wanted to stick around with Chelsea this pre-season to prove his worth.
Now with Disasi signed, things will change for Trevoh Chalobah. It is reasonable to assume he will be behind both Thiago Silva and Axel Disasi on the club’s depth chart at right centre-back. That’s without including Wesley Fofana, who does not have a timeline for a return yet. The Evening Standard is now reporting that Chalobah is willing to leave Chelsea this summer as he looks to become a candidate for Gareth Southgate’s 2024 Euros squad. Importantly, Evening Standard state Chelsea wants £45m for the 24-year-old defender.
This price comes as a bit of a surprise, given that there’s just a handful of teams in Europe who could even pay that price. Chalobah has been a regular starter for Chelsea in the Premier League, starting 35 matches in the last two seasons combined. Even with that, it’s hard to say his performances justify the massive price tag. Chelsea does hold plenty of leverage, though, as Chalobah’s current contract does not expire until 2028.
