“Getting close” Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea close to young striker
By Kian Long
Chelsea are planning to balance the books this summer, but that doesn’t mean they won’t make signings. Having already made a fair few, Todd Boehly is not the type to turn down an investment when he sees one.
Fabrizio Romano confirms Chelsea are close to Elye Wahi deal
Therefore, recent news from the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano won’t come as a surprise. According to Romano, Chelsea are close to agreeing to sign Elye Wahi from Montpellier. The plan is that the Blues would like to sign him, send him out on loan, then introduce him to the squad on a permanent basis after his loan spell.
Wahi is certainly a bright 20-year-old with a good future ahead of him. Last season, he scored an impressive 19 goals and provided 5 assists. At just 20 years old, he has shown an impressive eye for goal and the ability to make a goal out of nothing.
For the upcoming season, Chelsea have Jackson and Nkunku who will battle for the number 9 spot. However, there will be some more healthy competition once Wahi has gone out on loan.
I cannot help but think the player will have his reservations about this strategy. Obviously, I am not in the mind of Wahi or his agents but it seems disrespectful to sign a player and then send him on loan straight away. It gives the impression that we want you, just not right now.
Still, Wahi might see this as best. Next season will be about rebuild for Chelsea, given their absence from European competition and a new manager. Sending Wahi out on loan will give him invaluable experience to return to Stamford Bridge and fight for his place under Pochettino, who specialises in developing young talents.
