Former Manchester United player returns to club in ‘unexpected’ deal
By Evan Curnew
While the transfer of Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund reaches the latter stages, an unexpected singing is confirmed for Manchester United. The club has announced that defender Jonny Evans has signed a short-term deal. This contract will allow him to partake in the club’s friendlies in Scotland and the United States. United take on Olympique Lyon in Edinburgh on July 18th, and Evans will be a part of that squad. The Northern Ireland international has been training with Manchester United’s Under-21s and will join that group in San Diego for their pre-season camp.
It is hard to say whether or not Evans can land himself a full-time contract with the club. The odds are against him, but he could be an excellent veteran replacement for someone like Phil Jones, who has departed the club. The Times is reporting that, at the moment, a longer deal is not off the cards yet for Jonny Evans. Additionally, Evans still has an offer on the table from Leicester City, but his future is, of course, undecided.
Evans is no stranger to Manchester United. He is an academy product of the club and spent a total of 9 years at Old Trafford. Evans won the Champions League, three Premier League titles and two EFL cups during his Red Devils tenure. Evans then departed in 2015 for West Bromwich Albion before eventually signing for Leicester City, the club he has just left this summer.
Jonny Evans has been linked with a move to the likes of Leeds United, Southampton and Celtic. At 35 years old, Evans would bring a wealth of experience to plenty of sides, even if his game is not what it used to be.
Jonny Evans will be the only player currently in Manchester United’s first-team squad to be part of a Premier League title-winning side. David de Gea and Phil Jones, who both won the league, with United, have now departed the club.
