It’s finally official. Over the weekend, Arsenal announced the signing of Declan Rice. Well, it must be said that it was actually West Ham United who announced it first, with Arsenal making Rice their official player several hours after.

For the Hammers, the task is now to replace their captains. It’s not an easy task for sure, but one the recruitment team would have been working hard to achieve for the last few months. The deal was always going to happen, it was just a matter of time.

There are certainly options for West Ham. Indeed, last week we reported that Edson Alvarez was considered as the number one option, but now they have another option.

West Ham United eye Joao Palhinha to replace Declan Rice

According to talkSPORT, West Ham United hope to sign Joao Palhinha from their London rivals Fulham. It remains to be seen what the Cottagers value their midfielder at, but the Hammers hope to get the deal done for around £40m.

What works against West Ham is that Palhinha has until the summer of 2027 remaining on his contract. Therefore, Fulham may be less inclined to sell him. Making 40 appearances across all competitions last season, he is one of their most important players.

Should West Ham pull this off, though, they would be signing a great Declan Rice replacement. The two play similar roles and living in London already, it would take no time for Palhinha to adjust. £40m may be an ambitious stab in the dark, but it is worth trying. After all, lowball offers is what made Declan Rice go to Arsenal for cheaper than expected.

It’s cliché, but Premier League experience is not to be overlooked. If the valuations for Alvarez and Palhinha are similar, then Palhinha should be the option David Moyes opts for.
