Axel Disasi is an emerging player for Monaco and France – now Manchester United and Newcastle United want him

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that both Manchester United and Newcastle United are ‘exploring’ a deal for AS Monaco’s Axel Disasi. Romano states that Newcastle recently reached out to the player’s camp on potential contract details and is expected to contact Monaco soon. What will be good news to Man United fans is that Erik ten Hag has approved the pursuit of the Ligue 1 defender, and the club has already been in contact with the player. Despite having close talks with Disasi, Manchester United has yet to speak with Monaco over the transfer conditions.

Disasi has become one of the better Ligue 1 defenders and has now found himself subject to interest from UCL clubs. What might help move a transfer along is that AS Monaco has missed out on European football altogether. A player of Disasi’s calibre may push for a move, especially when he wants to impress France’s manager, Didier Deschamps, ahead of Euros 2024.

Disasi made his French national team debut at the World Cup in Qatar. While mainly staying on the bench, Disasi had a start against Tunisia in the group stage. Disasi has Congolese roots and previously played for the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s U20 side.

Disasi is a ball-playing centre-back who does his best work when the ball is at his feet. He is also a defensive aerial threat for Monaco but is not a strong tackler. Disasi lining up alongside Lisandro Martinez could be a deadly centre-back pairing for Erik ten Hag to use. Let’s not forget about Newcastle United, though. Sven Botman and Axel Disasi would put Newcastle’s already elite defense into a different world than most Premier League clubs.

Right now, things seem not to be advanced for either club, and Monaco will surely be hoping for a bidding war to commence.
