There have been many players from America that have played in the Premier League. The likes of Clint Dempsey, Brian McBride, Tim Howard, Tim Ream, and Landon Donovan have all been successful but in terms of the latest major USMNT to play in the Premier League, in particular with Chelsea, the jury is still out.
United States captain on the move
Christian Pulisic is hailed as the next best thing for USMNT and at just 24 years old he is expected to be the main star come the World Cup in 2026 in his native country. However, his time at Chelsea has been a mixed experience.
Since joining in 2019 from Borussia Dortmund; signing in the January but loaned back to Dortmund for the rest of the season, Pulisic started life at Stamford Bridge exceptionally well with nine goals in his debut season under Frank Lampard.
In his second season, he was instrumental in the Champions League win for Chelsea over Manchester City specifically in the semi-finals against Real Madrid. After scoring in the Bernabeau Pulisic became the youngest Chelsea player and the first American to score in the Champions League semi-finals. He also assisted Mason Mount in the second leg.
Another successful 2021-22 season in both the League and the Champions League, it was surprising that Pulisic was still not one of the first names on the teamsheet. It continued to be the case in a tumultuous season at Stamford Bridge.
The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea
The Argentinian has taken on a big challenge at Chelsea in terms of cleaning shop. There are a lot of players in the Chelsea squad and there are players there that need to be moved on from Stamford Bridge.
For Chelsea, they have a lot of wingers. With Callum Hudson-Odoi likely to be leaving, Pulisic is the other winger expected to leave.
Whether it is a case of Pulisic wanting to leave to get more guaranteed games or Pochettino not fancying the USA star, the outcome will ultimately be the same.
Who wants to sign Pulisic?
Last season there was talk of Manchester United bringing Pulisic in on loan but as they have just signed Mount there is not chance Chelsea will let two players leave to a rival in one window.
The strongest links are for a move to Italy with giants AC Milan interested in the direct winger. After an offer from Lyon did not appeal to Pulisic, AC Milan are expected to put their third and final bid in for him.
With Chelsea rejecting an offer of just under £20 million, they are expected to want at least £25 million if there are to be add-ons as opposed to a straight money deal.
It will be a shame to see Pulisic leave the Premier League as he has the potential to dominate the league but he will be keen to get games under his belt prior to the World Cup in his home country.
