Luton Town dramatically secured promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs in May. From a side who were battling in the League Two play-off semi-finals in 2017 against Blackpool, they are now a Premier League side.
They are now on the warpath to recruit the right players to stay in the promised land and survive against all the odds under Rob Edwards. The first player in their sights is an ex-Premier League player who was a favourite under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Which ex-United player could be returning to the Premier League?
Luton have decided that they want Tahith Chong to become one of theirs. In keeping with Luton’s structure, they are looking to youth to help the club progress as high as they can; that is why 23-year-old Chong fits the bill.
Chong is currently with Birmingham City after a loan move became permanent last season. He has impressed in the Championship and looks ready enough for the Premier League.
Chong was a main man last season for Birmingham and made 41 appearances across all competitions scoring 4 times and assisting 5 times.
The Dutch winger has developed significantly and you can see why Solskjaer was pushing for him to play in the first team in Premier League games and in the Europa League with Manchester United.
How much would Chong cost?
Having only just secured a permanent contract with Birmingham and with them paying £1.5 million for his services, the ball is firmly in Birmingham’s court. Chong would need Luton to pay way more than £1.5 million if they are to have him playing at Kenilworth Road next year.
However, after Chong ran the show against Luton two years ago, Edwards will be keen on making him a player of his next season.
It is estimated that the former Manchester United player would cost Luton in excess of £5 million given that he has three years left on his current contract with the Blues.
