Arsenal are thought to be in the advanced stages and incredibly close to signing Declan Rice. If yesterday’s Arsenal transfer news is anything to go by, then he could be signed as early as this week, after around a month of interest and negotiation with West Ham. But a certain Liverpool legend feels that he isn’t the best English midfielder.

Liverpool legend says Trent Alexander Arnold is better than Declan Rice

According to Dean Saunders (via talkSPORT), Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander Arnold, who has been playing as a midfielder more often recently, is a better player than Declan Rice. Well, the Liverpool legend has at least rated the Liverpool above Rice in the hierarchy, claiming anything that Rice can do, Trent can also do.

All I can say is that I want some of what Saunders is saying. It’s quite fitting that he resorted to talkSPORT to spout this nonsense, since it provides a perfect safe space for idiotic and illogical claims.

Now, I am by no means saying that Rice is a better player than Trent. I’m going to do the sensible thing by not comparing the two since, you know, they play in different positions. Who Rice should be compared to is the likes of Rodri, Casemiro and Partey. Not a converted midfielder whose track record in this position comes in a friendly against Malta.

I mean no offence to Malta when I say that but it’s not exactly a highbrow fixture, is it? Rice has excelled in this position in a European final and won, for crying out loud.

Give Trent some more time to develop as a midfielder, should this be the route he goes down, and then we can talk. But for now, this can simply be put down to another person changing their mind on Rice just because he is signing for Arsenal.
