A lot of the talk involving Arsenal at the moment involves players being signed. Understandably, fans will be more inclined to talk about signings than players being sold. And, in fairness, there have been many signings or players that are close to signing to talk about.

However, we mustn’t forget to discuss outgoings. When building a squad, you can’t just buy loads of players without selling. This is what Chelsea did and look at their position now. For Mikel Arteta, the thing which always comes first is his current crop of players, so when making new signings, he must assess where they fit into the squad and if they are likely to replace any first-team players.

One player who will certainly be affected by Arteta’s business this summer is Granit Xhaka. With Declan Rice coming in, it’s likely that the Swiss midfielder will be a rotational player at best. Therefore, with a year remaining on his contract, it is important that he looks for opportunities elsewhere.

Arsenal get the best deal for Granit Xhaka

According to Football London journalist Kaya Kaynak, Arsenal will get a €25m fee in return for Xhaka’s imminent move to Bayer Leverkusen. Given that he is 30 years old and, as mentioned, has a year left on his contract, Kaynak feels that Mikel Arteta got the best possible return for losing a player here.

And I agree. While it is not a lot of money, what we must consider is that this money might be the difference between signing an additional player like Romeo Lavia or not signing them. When you factor in that there was a time where Xhaka looked likely to leave for free, this also demonstrates great business from the Spanish boss.

What do you make of this situation – Is selling Granit Xhaka a wise choice to make by Arsenal or should they have kept him?
