Yesterday, Manchester United had their opening bid for the Danish talent Rasmus Hojlund rejected by his side Atalanta. In fairness, the bid was only £30m which was quite ambitious from the Old Trafford board. Surely they knew this opening bid had a slim chance of being accepted, so at the back of their mind they knew the likelihood was that a second bid needed to be made.
Manchester United plan second bid for Rasmus Hojlund
And a second bid will be made, if a claim from journalist Neil Custis is to be believed. The Sun journalist claims that Manchester United are preparing a second bid for Hojlund which will be around £40m. Certainly this would be enough to get the deal over the line, particularly after we reported earlier that Atalanta were holding out for around £34m-£39m.
A little side note about the source must be addressed. While I wouldn’t usually cite The Sun as a reputable source (in general, it is a poor source and is only a tabloid). However, Custis has a fairly good track record and is not the type to spout sensationalist stories. Therefore, I’d take this one seriously.

For context, Manchester United lack in this position. While Marcus Rashford did an adequate job as striker last season and was the club’s top goal scorer, this is not his natural position. He would much rather play out wide, which is only possible if United sign an out-and-out striker.
The jury is certainly out on Rasmus Hojlund. While I don’t think he’s the complete package just yet, he certainly can be. Ageing at just 20 years old, he excels in terms of his finishing, strength and speed. However, he lacks the track record of scoring a multitude of goals and he isn’t proven on the big stage yet. Still, under Erik ten Hag, he has room to develop for sure.
