Aston Villa secure the services of Pau Torres from Villarreal for less than release clause

Aston Villa are going strong in the ongoing summer transfer window. After securing Youri Tielemans, they have now signed Pau Torres from the Spanish outfit

According to recent reports, Aston Villa have made their second signing of the summer transfer window. They have signed Pau Torres from Villarreal in a five-year deal. The Villa Park outfit is set to sign the 26-year-old in a deal less than his release clause of £55.5 million.

Aston Villa is showing ambition to achieve big in the ongoing summer transfer window after the season they had in 2022/23. From being on the verge of relegation, they bounced back under Unai Emery to finish seventh and secure the UEFA Conference League berth. In the transfer window, they have signed Youri Tielemans on a Bosman transfer, while the versatile defender Pau Torres is their second signing.

Pau Torres in the 2022/23 season

The 26-year-old central defender enjoyed a great season with Villarreal as his side finished fifth and secured the UEFA Europa League, compared to seventh in the 2021/22 season. The player scored one goal in his 34 appearances in the Spanish top flight.

Pau Torres averaged 0.74 tackles won per game and made 0.38 interceptions per 90 minutes for Villarreal. He also won 55.1% of the aerial duels he contested. The ball-playing central defender had a pass completion rate of 85.1%, with over 54 passes per 90 minutes. The central defender excels in playing line-breaking passes to the final third, accounting for an average of 5.52 per game.

The Spanish central defender has 23 national caps and was part of the 2022 World Cup squad.

What next for Aston Villa and Unai Emery?

While Pau Torres is set to reunite with his former manager, Unai Emery, the club is set to focus on their next target. The club is interested in securing the signature of Tyler Adams from the relegated Leeds United side.
