Manchester United are known to play inflated wages. In truth, this is no fault but their own given their habit of offering players wages which other clubs simply cannot compete with. This habit was always going to come back and bite them in the backside, which it now has.

However, there are times where this generosity pays off. For example, when keeping your best players by giving them more incentive to sign a contract extension rather than moving to a different club. This is what Erik ten Hag plans to do with his best player, if reports are to be believed.

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are set to make Marcus Rashford their highest earner as they plan a lucrative financial package for him. To keep Rashford, who was the club’s top goal scorer last season, Erik ten Hag plans to offer him £375k per week to sign a new deal.

Good investment from Manchester United

Many will say that’s silly money and I’d be a fool to try and deny that. In fact, I think even the club owners would admit that it’s silly money, but it’s the price you have to pay to keep players like Rashford in your books. As much as people would not like to admit it – football is a business just as much as it is a game.

With their financial takeover, the priority for the new owners should be to keep United’s current best crop happy, before they go all out with ridiculous signings.

With the likes of Mason Mount linked, this is going to have a greater financial implication than extending Marcus Rashford’s contract. However, both incomings and keeping your current players are pivotal pillars of success, so in my opinion, making Rashford the highest earner at the club is not only justified, but a good investment.
