Manchester United close to an agreement for England star
By Phil Taylor
When it comes to Manchester United, they are linked with nearly every single player in the world in every single transfer window. However, they are looking to get their transfer dealings done quickly this year so that the transfer gossip ghouls cannot continue their charade throughout the summer. One player that they are close to an agreement over is Mason Mount of Chelsea.
According to reports, personal agreements have been reached, but the two clubs have yet to reach an agreement about how much the England international is actually worth.
How much are both parties wanting for Mason Mount?
With Mount’s contract expiring next summer, meaning he only has one year left on his contract, United does not want to pay over the odds for a player with such a short contract length. They do not want to risk waiting till next summer, with the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal sniffing around as well.
However, they are rumoured to be wanting to pay between £30-40 million for the Chelsea graduate, but that could fall short of the Chelsea valuation.
It is expected that Chelsea is going to demand £60-£70 million for the attacking midfielder, and there may not be much budging in that.
However, it is a dangerous game because next summer Mount will still be 25 years old and very much in the pomp of his footballing career. If he decides to dig his heels in to get a move, they could be set to lose out on a brilliant talent for nothing.
Is Mason Mount the signing United need?
Erik ten Hag has had tabs on Mason Mount since he was out on loan at Vitesse in the 2017/18 season. He already knew a lot about him from his time in Eredivise and clearly liked what he saw.
Mount has a lot of energy and stamina, which helps in a ten Hag side, but he could be an excellent replacement for Christian Eriksen in the long term but also rotational-wise, as it was clear this year that United tired massively towards the end of the season due to the number of games they played.
It is a signing that makes sense, and United are in need of a central midfielder. With an aging midfield and the likes of Fred, Scott McTominay, and Donny Van De Beek expected to be leaving, there is space for Mount.
The England international is technically gifted on the ball, and in a ten Hag system, he certainly could flourish. Only time will tell if the two clubs can come to an agreement.
