Newcastle United have undergone a serious transformation, both on and off the pitch. They are now a club to be feared both in the league standings and indeed the transfer window.

Having secured Champions League football, you’d think this would increase their pulling power in the market. However, they’ve had to learn the hard way that even this has its limits, after facing their first rejection.

3 midfielders Newcastle United could sign after Kalvin Phillips rejection

According to The Telegraph, Eddie Howe’s side have been informed that Kalvin Phillips intends to remain at Manchester City and will not make the move to St James Park this summer.

With that in mind, here are 3 alternatives which Newcastle United should consider…

1) Conor Gallagher

Chelsea are going to have a lot of players up for grabs this summer. With a hugely inflated squad, the club must have a serious clear out in order to balance the books. When you combine this factor with Mauricio Pochettino taking charge, there are some Chelsea players who just won’t make the cut for next season.

Conor Gallagher is thought to be one of the players up for sale this summer. Having undergone several loan spells over the last few seasons, the Englishman is seemingly at the end of his Chelsea career.

His box-to-box work-rate and technical all-roundness would make him the perfect option for Newcastle United as they seek an alternative to Kalvin Phillips. Having learnt under some of the best midfielders in the game, including Patrick Vieira and Frank Lampard, it’s time for Gallagher to put those lessons to use in a club with an upwards trajectory.

So, Conor Gallagher is certainly an option who is available for Newcastle United to consider. But he isn’t the only Premier League midfielder up for grabs. Press the button below for our analysis of Newcastle’s second option.
