It is understandable that Brighton are trying to be frugal in the transfer window. This is the first time in the club’s history that they are trying to restock their squad in preparation for European football next season. However, to offer £30m for Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is nothing but embarrassing.

Levi Colwill was a key component to Brighton’s terrific season, but Roberto De Zerbi isn’t entitled to him on that basis alone. Colwill made 17 Premier League appearances for the Seagulls this summer and turned into a real fan favourite, developing himself in the England U21 squad alongside his domestic commitments.

With that being said, it’s understandable that Chelsea have rejected Brighton’s £30m offer to sign him permanently. Chelsea would like to add a defensive reinforcement, so with Colwill returning from loan, this would save Pochettino the onus of hiring externally.

Further, Pochettino is one of the best in the business when it comes to managing young players. Roberto De Zerbi is an EXCELLENT manager, and Brighton’s long-term future will only improve if they keep him under contract but the truth must be met – Colwill should feel safer developing under Pochettino since he has a proven track record at promoting youth.

In this market, you are not going to sign one of the hottest prospects in England for any less than £50m, let alone £30m. But what’s important for Brighton is that they learn from this, there’s no point in going in for a second bid because Chelsea have declared that Colwill is not up for sale at any price. Instead, the Seagulls must consider their alternatives.

Brighton are considering many options, and good for them. They should take this rejection as a lesson, it’s time to make other moves in the market.

Do you think Levi Colwill will be a success at Chelsea?
