With Leicester City suffering a sad closing day which saw them relegated from the Premier League, football fans were quick to reminisce the season they won the league. All that Arsenal fans will remember from that season is when their North London rivals Spurs finished third in a two-horse race.

Jokes aside, it was a sad day for football when Leicester were relegated. However, it does offer a new lease of life to some of their players who, let’s face it, are far too good for the Championship. Perhaps Leicester’s best player, James Maddison, is one of those players.

Given Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League and the fact that Maddison is entering the final year of his contract, it would be a miracle if he stays at the King Power Stadium.

Arsenal will battle with Spurs for James Maddison

Arsenal are one of the three Premier League clubs eyeing James Maddison, alongside Newcastle United and Spurs. This is according to the Mirror. However, Arsenal aren’t as desperate as the two other clubs might be to sign him.

See, the report also claims that the Gunners still prioritise the signing of Declan Rice. While there is opportunity to sign both Rice and Maddison given Rice is a 6 and Maddison is a 10, Arsenal’s condition is that they’d have to sell a player before bringing in Maddison.

Given that Mikel Arteta is likely to lose both Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey this summer, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them pursue Maddison who is valued at only £40m. I mean, it does seem like an opportunity wasted if not.

I guess time will tell, but the priority for Arsenal remains to sign Declan Rice, although they’ll have to be quick about it if today’s transfer news is to be believed.
