‘Didn’t let me win a final’: Jose Mourinho calls out Tottenham’s Daniel Levy
By Evan Curnew
Jose Mourinho is on the brink of winning his 6th European trophy but he’s made recent headlines for another reason
Ahead of the 2023 Europa League final between Sevilla and Roma, Jose Mourinho picked up the mic. The decorated manager was asked about his future in Rome as discussions over a contract extension continue.
The always vocal Mourinho gave a direct answer that has put Daniel Levy back in the spotlight. Daniel Levy is the chairman of Tottenham Hotspur and oversees the transfers at the club. Jose Mourinho was the manager of Tottenham Hotspur between 2019 & 2021, being succeeded by the also now-gone Antonio Conte.
Jose Mourinho decided to reflect on his managerial career as a whole when asked about his Roma future:
"“The only club in my career where I don’t have still a deep feeling with is Tottenham. Probably because the stadium was empty, covid time… probably because Mr. Levy didn’t let me win a final and win a trophy… but he’s the only one”."
Daniel Levy, especially among Spurs fans, has become known as a stingy businessman. Under Mourinho, Tottenham signed the likes of Giovanni Lo Celso, Steven Bergwijn, Sergio Reguilon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Doherty. It is telling that just a single player listed is still a regular player with the club.
Jose Mourinho was shockingly sacked just 6 days before Spurs’ were set to face off against Manchester City in the EFL Cup final in 2021. He was replaced by Ryan Mason, who is still at the club, again acting as interim manager.
Mourinho did show love to Premier League sides Chelsea and Manchester United though:
"“Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid [and] Manchester United, all the clubs, I feel a connection”.“[Roma & I] will be connected forever, like with all my previous clubs… apart from Mr. Levy’s club”."
It’s safe to say that Mourinho has no love for the North London club but clearly his frustration lies with the management at Tottenham. The Special One’s feelings towards the ownership at Tottenham are not unique. Antonio Conte, who was sacked by Tottenham in March 2023 voiced concerns about transfers after a 3-3 draw against Southampton.
