For quite some time now, Manchester United has dealt with backlash due to poor defensive performances. The errors and performances of centre-backs have left United fans and football pundits enraged on multiple occasions. This season though, Lisandro Martinez has been a standout performer for the club as a centre-back.

However, the performances of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are still questioned. Despite multiple chances, the duo has not shown a promise while playing for United. In order to now find a resolution, the 20-time league winners have shown interest in signing Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni.

But signing the Italian won’t be so easy. Reports suggest that United’s derby rivals, Manchester City, are also interested in securing the services of Bastoni. Considering his performances, it is no surprise that the 24-year-old is garnering the attention of two of England’s biggest clubs. The report reads:

"“Manchester United and Manchester City are interested in taking over the services of Alessandro Bastoni in the next transfer window. A new edition of the Manchester derby for the signing of one of the best centre-backs in Serie A today. This season he has six assists in 33 games played in all competitions, which has caught the attention of the two teams from the city of Manchester.” – Fichajes"

Considering the interest, it will be worthy  to observe Bastoni’s future. The Italian’s current deal at San Siro expires in 2024. And if the player truly wishes to leave Inter, the club would ideally look to sell him this summer to get a hefty price for the player.

Manchester United target Bastoni could be a great buy for Manchester City

When Manchester City look into their ranks, they have quite a few talented centre-backs. However, if recent reports are to be believed, City center-back Aymeric Laporte is looking to walk away from the club this summer. If true, it is not shocking as Laporte in recent times has struggled to find game time under Pep Guardiola.

Well, if Laporte exits City, signing Bastoni would only be beneficial to the club. One of the major reasons why Bastoni would be a good signing is because of City playing a back three. For the majority of his career, Laporte has played in a back three and has less experience operating in the back four, which is used by United.

Also from an investment point of view, Bastoni is only 24 years old. The player is young enough to give City many years of good performances and in the process form a solid backline for the club.
