Chelsea are set to undergo their biggest test all season, as they face Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. Many have been quick to write off Frank Lampard‘s men, as they don’t see the side as strong enough to compete with Real Madrid, who are masters in this competition. But let’s not forget, Chelsea and indeed Lampard, know this competition well too.

But as a manager, Lampard hasn’t had the best of luck. Therefore, you can understand the pessimism. He’s been thrown in at the deep end and only had a few weeks in preparation for this game to decipher and fix the mess which Graham Potter left behind.

GiveMeSport have revealed that there’s a chance Chelsea will implement a back three against Real Madrid tonight. This is in the hopes they can counter their ferocious attack. Furthermore, they’ll be helped by the potential return of Thiago Silva, who was promisingly back in training this week in preparation for the match.

Playing a back three might be the wisest choice. Not only would it give Chelsea more defensive reassurance since it switches to a back five out of possession, but going forward they would have more options.

Reverting to a back three so soon before the game could actually work in Lampard’s favour. His aim is to throw off Madrid, who would not have prepared as much to face a back three. Although, Los Blancos are the type of team who can overcome any obstacle thrown their way sinc they are the masters of improvisation.

It’s going to be an interesting game for the neutral. Both teams are not in the best form domestically, but the case is much worse for Chelsea who sit mid-table in the Premier League.
