Arsenal legend Mesut Ozil announces retirement – Here’s his best assist
By Kian Long
Mesut Ozil has announced his retirement from professional football within the last hour. It feels like it’s been a long-time coming, after he announced his international retirement in the last decade. As a Premier League fan-site, it’s only right that we throw it back to his Arsenal days and remember his greatest assist.
And this was no easy task. It was like finding a needle in a, well, needle stack. There were THAT many to choose from.
Luckily, when I did stumble across one, it brought back an array of memories and it stood clearly above the rest. I don’t think any Arsenal player has provided an assist quite as good as this since the assist king, Mesut.
Wow. What an absolutely astonishing assist this was from Mesut Ozil in the match between Arsenal and Aston Villa. It was a vintage Arsene Wenger performance, where the Gunners netted an astonishing five goals, with the scoreline ending 5-0.
Not only did Ozil provide the greatest assist of that season but he scored a goal in this match too. The goal he scored came just weeks after he scored his goal against Manchester City, silencing the “Ozil goes missing in big games” mob.
The game put Arsenal ahead of bitter rivals Tottenham, overtaking them in 5th place. It might seem weird to say now, but to get into the top four after this match, they relied on Southampton (who were 4th at this time) to drop points.
Towards the end of the season, though, in true Arsene Wenger fashion the Gunners did finish in the top four, third to be precise.
When thinking back to Mesut Ozil playing for Arsenal, is there a memory which stands out to you?
