Arsenal fans will shed a tear as Alexis Sanchez embraces Mesut Ozil

When Mesut Ozil announced earlier that he would retire fully from professional football, it brought a wave of nostalgia to all Arsenal fans. When thinking back to the Ozil days, surely nothing else can make Arsenal fans as nostalgic, right?

Wrong. Try throwing Alexis Sanchez into the mix as well. The friendship those two had on the pitch was generational and truly iconic to the Arsene Wenger era. The two players were pivotal to the final few years of Arsene’s reign and countless times they were seen terrorising defenders.

Posting to his Instagram, Alexis Sanchez embraced his old friend Ozil’s retirement by taking a trip down memory lane. Alexis posted a compilation of photos including when the two of them lit up the Champions League, lifted the FA Cup and, of course, they were smiling in every photo.

While it didn’t paint the whole picture as the two shared a lot of downs, fans will only remember the ups when thinking of those two together. That’s just the legacy they left behind.

Alexis captioned the post “We really understood each other, my friend.” And that they did. While Alexis was the chief goal scorer a lot of the time, let’s not forget the creative work of Ozil, who would find his Chilean teammate running into space with some excellent passes.

Then, Alexis finished by wishing Ozil well in the next chapter of his life. The next chapter, Ozil aims, will involve spending quality time with his beloved wife and children. Although, Ozil loves social media so I wouldn’t put it past him updating us all on how retired life is going, as well as some throwback pictures to his former playing days.
