As we enter into the final quarter of the EFL Championship season, promotion contenders are starting to emerge

The EFL Championship often referred to as just the Championship, is the second tier of English football. What makes the EFL Championship such a competitive and challenging league is that 24 teams are competing for 3 promotion spots to the English Premier League. With each team playing 46 games a season (home and away against the other 23 sides), there is a lot of fixture congestion for teams at this level, especially when factoring in cup games as well.

At the end of the EFL Championship season, the top two teams in the table will be automatically promoted to the Premier League. The team that finishes first wins the league title, which was most recently won by Fulham in 2022, who of course is now in the Premier League.

Places three to six at the end of the season qualify for the promotion playoffs. The 3rd place team face-off against the team that finished 6th in a two-legged playoff match, both home and away. The same happens between 4th and 5th place.

The winners after these two semi-finals head to Wembley Stadium in London for the playoff promotion final where the winner of this game gets promoted to the Premier League. Given the financial power of being in the Premier League, this match is often considered the most expensive match in football with hundreds of millions of dollars on the line.

So, who could be promoted?
