Manchester United need a serious revamp. They’ve done well this season, and their progress after the World Cup shouldn’t be overlooked. However, to enter AND exit a title race within such a quick succession demonstrates a poor mentality, something which can only be fixed by bringing in proven talent in areas of the field which need it.
Many point to Casemiro as one of the best midfielders in the league. In my opinion he is, also he’s one of the best midfielders in the world. However, he’s a liability. Too often he dives into reckless challenges and hinders his side – another red card in the match yesterday demonstrated this.
Other than Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes (if you consider him a midfielder), Manchester United lack world-class talent in this area of the pitch. Christian Eriksen is borderline but is far too injury prone to be taken seriously by any serious analyst.
According to Pete O’Rourke (via Football Insider) Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has two exceptional midfielders on his summer shortlist. The report claims that United would like to reignite the relationship between Ten Hag and Frenkie de Jong. Also, they’re eyeing Eduardo Camavinga of Real Madrid.
It’s likely the Red Devils will only sign one. They’re more than likely going to favour Frenkie de Jong, who they’ve been long-term admirers of. Given Barcelona’s financial dilemma, they may be more open to selling their best players than before.
What’s important to remember, though, is Manchester United’s European status is important here. They’re not guaranteed to qualify for the Champions League, especially given their form of late.
Who do you think Manchester United will sign in summer?
