It’s a structural problem at Chelsea, not a personal one. While many are quick to point their fingers at Graham Potter, it’s not solely his fault. The blame should also be put on Todd Boehly for his reckless and frankly clueless spending in the transfer window. Also, the players are responsible for not forming a collective identity and instead, playing as a group of individuals.
It was revealed by The Top Flight earlier that Graham Potter had been issued a final ultimatum. Essentially, he has two matches to prove his worth at Stamford Bridge. However, to simply sack Potter will fix nothing, as the other structural problems remain.
Potter has recognised this and, for the sake of the club, has finally raised his voice. According to the Metro, Graham Potter has blamed Todd Boehly’s reckless spending for ‘undermining’ him in training. Potter has had to resort to sending players away in training for individual drills. No coach in the universe could single-handedly man-manage all the players that Boehly has signed.
I don’t think he actually thought this, but if Todd Boehly thinks that spending extortionate money on players the club hasn’t researched will fix their problems, he is clueless. Unfortunately, football is slowly turning into a business and passion for the sport is not with the people in charge.
I side with Potter on this one. Of course it’s difficult for him to manage players he never had a say on signing. Unfortunately, the role of a head coach is a little different in the sense they don’t have as much a say about transfers. If Boehly understood Potter’s long-term goal, he would sign players that tied in with this but instead, he thinks sacking him is a more viable option.
I do predict Potter to be sacked but it’s no fault of his own, more a collective fault. Chelsea is toxic at the moment. It needs a serious change from the top-down.
Do you agree with Graham Potter’s criticism of Todd Boehly?
