Arsenal picked up another invaluable three points at the King Power Stadium yesterday. The game had a lot of positive attacking moves from the Gunners but it was their defending which stole the show. Leicester City had an xG of 0.01 which is pretty much unseen. It was due to the defence, who were tested at times, but remained solid throughout.
William Saliba is accredited for turning around Arsenal’s defensive shape. Since he returned from his loan spell at the start of the season, the Frenchman has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League. Not only is he composed on the ball, but he has an eye for the game which makes him potentially world-class. If he carries on the way he’s going, he’ll be considered among the world’s best.
This is why, ageing at just 21 years old, Arsenal need to tie him down to a new contract. There was a point time when he was on loan that fans didn’t think he was part of Mikel Arteta’s plans. But now the Spanish boss has seen what he provides and how much he’s matured, Saliba’s one of the first names on the team sheet.
According to a report from Football Insider, Arsenal have opened talks with William Saliba over a new contract. The report states that the Gunners are confident he will sign, with a number of other first team players set to undergo contract talks.
Having already granted a new contract to Gabriel Martinelli, Saliba is thought to be soon, along with Bukayo Saka (according to Sky Sports).
It’s great to see that Arsenal are prioritising their young core and securing their long-term futures. If they were to win the Premier League this season, then big teams around Europe will be monitoring their best players.
