West Ham: David Moyes given a final chance before facing sack
By Evan Curnew
David Moyes has been on the hot seat at West Ham for most of the season but it looks as though things may finally be coming to an end.
According to The Times, West Ham gaffer David Moyes will be sacked if the club loses next weekend against Nottingham Forrest at London Stadium. Should West Ham lose and sack David Moyes, there is no one who is seen as an immediate front-runner to take the job at the moment.
West Ham United currently sits 18th in the Premier League table, a relegation spot. While the club has been a middle-of-the-pack team in goals conceded, they are shockingly 4th-joint-worse in goals scored in the Premier League this season.
Although David Moyes may finally be seeing his time end in East London, he has played an important part in the club’s recent history, helping them avoid relegation. He has been appointed West Ham manager twice, first in 2017 when he helped the club avoid the drop after taking over the club in a relegation spot. Despite keeping West Ham up he was let go. He eventually returned again in the fall of 2019 and in a similar fashion was tasked with avoiding relegation and he succeed once again albeit by the skin of his teeth, in 16th place.
Under Moyes the following seasons, the club finished 6th and 7th respectively, earning them qualification to Europa League in 2021 and Europa Conference League this season. The club is still in the Europa Conference League, having topped their group as they await their round of 16 opponents.
David Moyes of course will be remembered for his 11-year tenure at Goodison Park with Everton and his subsequent move to Manchester United where he lasted just a single season.
Given West Ham’s immediate recent success in the Premier League, it would be quite the story should the club go down, especially given the number of players on big wages. Captain Declan Rice’s future is also uncertain and should the club go down that would almost certainly confirm the end of his spell at West Ham.
Should Moyes be sacked, West Ham will have to get their successor in quickly to help fight what should be a relegation battle that goes down to the wire.
