James Ward-Prowse wants to snatch the Premier League free kick record for most free kicks scored.
After his astonishing free-kick goal against Chelsea, Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse is just one free-kick away from matching David Beckham’s Premier League free kick record.
According to FanNation, David Beckham scored 18 free-kick goals in 265 Premier League matches. This is an incredible record given James Ward-Prowse has 17 free kick goals in 328 Premier League matches.
No matter what happens, James Ward-Prowse will go down in Premier League folklore with his English counterpart Beckham. Ward-Prowse is one of the most technically-gifted dead-ball players in the world right now.
Given Southampton’s fight to stay up, you wouldn’t put it past Ward-Prowse from stepping up with another free kick between now and them. However, the frightening thing for Saints’ fans is that Ward-Prowse might be running out of time to match that record.
If Southampton are relegated this season, which looks likely at this point in the season, then it’s incredibly unlikely we’ll see Ward-Prowse playing for them in the Championship. If he does play for them next season, he will not have the opportunity to break the Premier League record.
He’s 28 years old which means as a midfielder, he’s in the prime of his career. Southampton already face a battle to keep away competitors from signing him, however, if the Saints go down, they’ll be left with no alternative but to sell their best player.
Southampton come up against Leeds United next in the Premier League, then it’s Leicester City. Both of their upcoming opponents are in and around the drop-off zone, so they will need more Ward-Prowse magic to inspire their way out of the relegation zone.
Do you think James Ward-Prowse will ever break David Beckham’s Premier League free kick record?
