According to the latest report from Football Insider, Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have deemed it necessary to sell one more ‘superstar’ player. This is amid the planning of a summer overhaul and potential financial takeover.

FSG have always run the club on a self-sustaining basis. This essentially means that to buy big, you must sell big. A prime example of this being the sale of (in my opinion) Liverpool’s best player Sadio Mane last summer, to make way for Darwin Nunez. Evidently, not everyone agrees with this as Liverpool and Everton both protest that their board sells their shares to make way for new owners.

This season, there aren’t many players at Anfield you could consider ‘superstar’ level. Mohamed Salah is certainly up there, and would garner a large transfer fee. Football Insider also predict that Alisson, Darwin Nunez, Trent Alexander Arnold and Luis Diaz are considered in this bracket.

One of these players risks being sold in the summer and, in my opinion, I wouldn’t bet against it being Salah. According to a report yesterday, Liverpool are monitoring the situation involving Ansu Fati at Barcelona, potentially plotting a summer bid for him.

Alisson has potential to be sold, but much less potential than Salah. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and one of the only diamonds in the rough at Liverpool at the moment. Darwin Nunez has only just signed – he will be given more time. Luis Diaz is highly valued at Liverpool, and Trent is just as likely as Salah to be sold given his lack of form this season.

Of course, this is all dependent on the new owners, whoever they may be, and how they feel about the club selling one of their best assets. They may push to revolutionise the club into a new financial plan, which is more modern in the sense of long-term investments as opposed to the current prudent model.
