Leeds United could turn to former Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard after receiving a few knock backs in their search for a new manager.

Gerrard’s time at Villa Park was not a success. However, according to Tutto Mercato Web, “Gerrard, is also among the profiles that Leeds pays attention to.”

Leeds is currently without a manager following the sacking of Jesse Marsch on Monday. Michael Skubala is in temporary charge and they managed a 2-2 draw against Manchester United last night. The Yorkshire side would have taken a point before the game but they would be disappointed on the night, having let go of a two-goal lead.

The Red Devils needed Jadon Sancho to rescue them off the bench. They will meet again at Elland Road in the Premier League this weekend. Leeds will unlikely have a new manager in place for that game.

Is Gerrard the right man for the job?

Gerrard’s record in the Premier League with Aston Villa is not great; in 38 games he managed 12 wins, eight draws and 18 defeats. Although throughout his playing career, Gerrard showed that he was not one to give up easily, he will be even more driven to succeed as a manager.

He was recently linked with taking over the Poland national team. However, the job eventually went to Fernando Santos who has previously coached Portugal and Greece. Any jobseeker will tell you that being turned down for your lack of experience can be very frustrating.

Although, Gerrard is a young coach he has experienced a lot. He has worked in Liverpool’s academy coaching their U18s and U19s. He has also won the Scottish Premiership with Rangers and was regarded as a very promising manager before Aston Villa.

Gerrard will always be a legend with Rangers for preventing Celtic from winning ten league titles in a row. His league record with The Gers is 107 games, with 76 wins, 21 draws and just ten defeats.

It was a risk leaving Scotland to take the Aston Villa job and at the time it was thought of as a stepping stone for Gerrard to one day take over at Liverpool.

Leeds’ options are becoming limited

Carlos Corberan was an early favourite but he has since committed himself to West Bromwich Albion by signing a new contract.

Another option was Rayo Vallecano coach, Andoni Iraola. Although, according to Onda Cero “Iraola has decided to remain in the franjirrojo group since he considers that leaving at this time would be leaving his team stranded.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has been linked with the job, but he is on course to win the league with The Hoops so would unlikely leave at this time.

With their options limited, taking a chance on Gerrard may be the best bet. It will not go down great with their supporters because of his poor record at Aston Villa but they need to get behind whoever takes over as they are just one point above the relegation zone.
