Leeds United have sacked Jesse Marsch following their defeat to Nottingham Forest yesterday which leaves them 17th in the Premier League.

A statement on the Leeds website said, “We would like to thank Jesse and his backroom staff for their efforts and wish them well for the future.

“The process of appointing a new head coach is underway and we will continue to keep supporters up to date throughout the coming days.”

It was always going to be a tough job replacing fan favourite Marcelo Bielsa and the role got even tougher after the club let Kalvin Philips and Raphinha go last summer.  Marsch leaves Leeds after less than a year in charge. His record in the Premier League is 32 games with eight wins, nine draws and 15 defeats.

Compared with other managers from the USA in the Premier League, Marsch will rank second best out of three. Bob Bradley’s time with Swansea was a disaster with him lasting just 85 days. While David Wagner will go down as the best so far with him getting Huddersfield Town promoted and keeping them in the league for a season.

Wagner is now coaching Norwich in the Championship and this may be where Marsch needs to go in order to rebuild his reputation. Dropping down a division or moving to a club elsewhere in Europe will be likely destinations for the outgoing Leeds boss.

Who could replace Marsch at Leeds?

The Daily Mail has revealed that “Carlos Corberan is emerging as a potential candidate.” Corberan is currently in charge at West Bromwich Albion and has worked with Leeds before as coach of their U23 side.

At West Brom, he has done a great job this season, getting them into the playoff places after he took over from Steve Bruce. However, he does not have any Premier League experience.

Many Leeds fans would want to see Bielsa return. Although, Fabrizio Romano has announced that his “return is described as ‘unlikely’ at this stage — huge respect for what he did in the past but plans look now different as things stand.”

Leeds has some tough games coming up, starting with a doubleheader against rivals Manchester United. Then they have relegation six-pointers against Everton and Southampton before they face Chelsea. The club will be hoping they have a new manager bounce just like Sean Dyche delivered for the Toffees against Arsenal at the weekend.

Where does Marsch go from here?

There is a vacancy in the U.S. men’s national team after Gregg Berhalter’s contract expired. Marsch is a former player and assistant coach of the USMNT. It would be a great job for the Marsch with the USA co-hosting the 2026 World Cup.

Marsch has in the past expressed his commitment to coaching club football. His last three jobs have all been in Europe; Red Bull Salzburg, RB Leipzig and Leeds. With how his time in the Premier League has ended, he may be more inclined to prove himself at a European club rather than heading into the international game.
