Chelsea could have a seriously big end to the January transfer window…

Chelsea have spent an absolute fortune, not just this January but over the last two transfer windows. Despite being closely monitored by Financial Fair Play rules, Todd Boehly has worked hard to find as many loopholes possible, including signing players on lengthy contracts and less up-front payments.

But, the prized possession for the Blues is still Enzo Fernandez. After failing to sign the World Cup star earlier in the transfer window, despite him pushing for a move, the Blues have not lost hope.

According to a report from the Telegraph (subscription required), Chelsea have now reopened talks with Benfica about signing Fernandez before the transfer window comes to a close tomorrow (Tuesday).

Furthermore, Record (in Portuguese), claim that efforts from Fernandez are still being made. The outlet who has been key to breaking the news across this saga state that Fernandez has insisted to Benfica that he wants to move to Chelsea this January. The player hopes Benfica will accept the £105m Chelsea are willing to pay.

I’ll be honest – I have no idea what trick Boehly has up his sleeve this time to avoid breaking UEFA rules. What I do know is that it will come back to bite the London club in the backside in the long-run.

Still, the Chelsea fans won’t mind. Their retort is that their club will be getting one of the best young players in Europe, and they’d be right. Enzo had a terrific World Cup run and having already proven himself on the biggest stage of them all, nobody can throw the cliché “Premier League is too difficult” card.

For Chelsea, this is now a race against times. With just the remainder of today and tomorrow left to complete the deal, they will need to be efficient. We have seen examples already this month of how they are capable of quick transfers, but this one could break the internet, considering all they have spent already this month.
