Newcastle is prepared to make Anthony Gordon the next forward through the doors at St James’ Park

According to The Telegraph, Anthony Gordon is a Newcastle target and the Northern club are confident in securing the services of the Liverpool kid. Furthermore, Sky Sports is reporting that Newcastle is currently in talks with Everton over a move and a deal in the £40M range could be completed this month.

Anthony Gordon was subject to much interest last summer when the forward was very close to joining Chelsea but the forward ultimately started the season with Everton. According to multiple reports from the summer transfer window, Newcastle also held an interest in the winger but never came close to making a move.

Anthony Gordon has spent time on both sides of the two big Merseyside clubs, previously playing for Liverpool’s academy before being released and subsequently picked up by Everton. Gordon went out on loan to Preston North End in the EFL Championship in February of 2021 and since then has been a staple feature for Everton. When there was fear of relegation last season for the toffies, Gordon played a vital role in helping the club stay up and became a popular figure for Everton supporters.

How could Gordon fit in with Newcastle?

Mainly playing off the left wing, Gordon does not bring an impressive amount of goal contributions but is mainly used to help carry the ball into the final third with his dribbling and rapid pace. Gordon is able to use his speed to track back very well and break up counter-attacks with his aggressive defensive awareness.

Currently, Newcastle’s two left-wingers are Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin with the former playing a key part in Eddie Howe’s resurgence of Newcastle. While an exciting player, it is likely Gordon would start off the bench, acting as a super-sub to cause havoc.

Newcastle has formally submitted a bid according to Fabrizio Romano.
