Frank Lampard on the brink of being sacked at Everton
By Evan Curnew
Frank Lampard and Everton seem to be destined to part ways in the immediate future
At the beginning of this Premier League season, Frank Lampard’s job already was on the line after nearly being relegated last year. 6 months later, Everton find themselves in 19th place and sitting in a relegation spot.
Everton has gone 7 consecutive games without winning in the Premier League and currently have the least amount of wins this season (3), with two of those wins coming over last-place Southampton and 18th-placed West Ham.
On January 4th after a 4-1 trouncing to Brighton at home, Everton and Frank Lampard were booed off the pitch as the crowd sang “sack the board” in unison. Since then, Everton has been knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United and lost to Southampton at home, who had not won at Goodison Park since 1997. Whilst there have not been reports confirming the Chelsea legend’s immediate departure, it feels like it is a matter of when and not if at this point.
According to the Daily Mail, Frank Lampard is the heavy betting favourite to be the next Premier League manager sacked. He was already one of the closest watched managers to be next but the toxic atmosphere building at Goodison Park looks to be meeting a breaking point.
During his tenure with Everton, Lampard has just 9 wins in 37 Premier Leagues matches and a combined point-per-game total of 0.95.
Who could replace Lampard at Everton?
Mirror Football on January 7th claimed that former Burnley manager Sean Dyche is seen as a replacement for Frank Lampard should he be sacked but Everton’s biggest problem is scoring goals, which Dyche’s defensive style of managing will not help.
Italian manager Domenico Tedesco could be seen as a solid replacement should Lampard be sacked. Tedesco has managed the likes of Schalke, Spartak Moscow and most recently RB Leipzig. Tedesco’s Leipzig scored 84 goals in just 38 matches. Tedesco was sacked in September 2022 after a loss to Shaktar Donetsk in the Champions League. To no surprise, the former Red Bull manager likes an aggressive pressing style and winning back the ball after losing possession.
Another potential option is Peter Bosz, a Dutch manager who most recently was with Olympique Lyon. Bosz will be remembered for his time at Feyenoord as a player and as a manager when he took Ajax all the way to the 2017 Europa League final where they ultimately lost to Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. Much like Tedesco, Bosz is an attacking-minded manager who usually encompasses a fast build-up play to his tactics.
Everton will be heading to London Stadium this weekend as they take on West Ham in the reverse fixture. A loss may seal the exit of Frank Lampard at Everton.
