Liverpool are relying on their own efforts and opponents’ stumbles to try and secure a place in the next Champions League

Liverpool fans were once again left disappointed with their side’s performance after losing 2-0 to Brighton at The American Express Community Stadium in the 20th Premier League matchday.

For the tough encounter, manager Jurgen Klopp opted for a 4-3-3 formation with no surprises in the starting line-up, with only one change from the FA Cup clash against Wolves due to the injury to Darwin Nunez. Oxlade-Chamberlain was the replacement in the final third.

Meanwhile, manager Roberto De Zerbi made three changes to the line-up from the FA Cup win against Boro. Sanchez returned between the sticks and Dunk returned to the back four. Finally, Gross returned to the right-back position.

Liverpool’s poor first-half performance foreshadowed ‘chaos’

Unfortunately for the Liverpool fan, the Reds were nowhere near the goal at any point. Brighton amassed the best chances, with Alexander-Arnold saving a fatal ball over the line to prevent Solly March’s goal.

Evan Ferguson and Kaoru Mitoma also racked up good scoring opportunities, while the Reds failed to get any shots on target throughout the first half.

The broadcast cameras showed a Jurgen Klopp unhappy with Liverpool’s huge passivity in the first half, allowing too much space on both flanks, repeating mistakes from other matches this season.

Brighton completely dominated proceedings in the second half

The negative situation for the Reds in the first half turned into goals for Brighton, who built a historic win over the Reds with three beautiful goals.

The first goal came in the 46th minute, with March receiving with freedom to hit the ball past goalkeeper Alisson after an assist from Lallana. The second goal came in the 53rd minute after March scored a superb goal after Ferguson had opened up the Reds defence, lifting the ball into the box.

To sacrament another great display from Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton, Welbeck scored a spectacular goal as he dominated inside the box and beat Alisson after great play.

Liverpool need to improve performance urgently and without signings

With only eighth place in the league table and 28 points earned, Liverpool need to change their focus and already start preparing for next season.

Jurgen Klopp has renewed his contract with the Reds and is still the right name to lead a squad of great resources, but one that definitely needs replacements for next season. However, the fans’ focus needs to be concentrated on the players currently available.

No major goals will be achieved this season. Therefore, the Reds need a 100% focus on finishing fourth in the Premier League table to seek a spot in the next Champions League and “save the season”.
