In-form striker Harry Kane will be looking to continue his recent goal-scoring form this weekend as he chases down Spurs legend Jimmy Greaves’ club record of 266 goals.

A week can be a very long time in the life of a Premier League club, and Tottenham Hotspur have made a tumultuous start to the calendar year. Spurs hosted Aston Villa in the first league game of 2023 and promptly lost 2-0 in what was described by the BBC as a ‘lacklustre’ performance which saw fans boo the team off before venting their fury to the board. What followed was a very public denouncement of the talents of his players when manager Antonio Conte spoke to the press post-match:

"“To become title contenders here you need a solid foundation. We don’t have many players who are really good to beat the man. We don’t have many creative players in our team. For sure today was really difficult”."

Just 3 days later Spurs faced off against city rivals Crystal Palace and, in doing so, sought to put behind them the previous comments and performance. The catalyst for change; the one thing that doesn’t change at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – namely the goal scoring exploits of Harry Kane. The star striker netted twice in a 4-0 win, bagging the crucial opening two goals as the front line found its feet. This brace taking him just 2 goals shy of equalling the club record of 266 goals set by Jimmy Greaves in the early 1970s.

One way Greaves does have an edge over Kane is as a trophy winner. As well as the European Cup Winner’s cup medal he holds from 1963, Greaves twice won the FA Cup with Spurs, in both 1962 and 1967. Kane’s Spurs now enter this season’s FA Cup tournament with a home tie against struggling division one outfit Portsmouth, who earlier this week sacked manager Danny Cowley.

In a week where the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust have written to the club detailing serious concerns about the current situation, the positivity from seeing Kane break the all-time goal-scoring record and galvanise the undoubted talents of the Spurs squad would be a welcome relief. A slip up against lower league opposition could spell disaster.
