Manchester United are planning ahead in their quest to replace Harry Maguire.

Harry Maguire has been underwhelming during his time at Manchester United – I think that’s fair to say. However, regardless of your opinion on him, one thing’s clear; Manchester United need to seek a replacement for the English defender. While it’s been made clear he won’t leave Old Trafford this transfer window, Maguire’s long-term future is still unknown.

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United have entered initial negotiations with Axel Disasi, the 24-year-old who was part of France’s World Cup squad which came second in the competition via a penalty shootout.

Axel Disasi is a key part of Monaco’s squad. His primary position is at centre-back, however, his versatility also allows him to play as a right-back. This could be a significant boost to Erik ten Hag in case of injuries, as Harry Maguire is very much a centre back only.

Disasi has made 17 appearances for Monaco in Ligue 1 this season, featuring in the starting XI a solid 94% of the time. He has scored one goal and provided three assists, which is an incredible stat for a defender.

The Daily Mail claim that Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are also interested in signing Axel Disasi. However, Manchester United are in the better form this season and look more likely to push for Champions League football; something which will attract Disasi as he is used to playing at the highest level.

Erik ten Hag is building a long-term project at Manchester United. This is why it’s good to see him using the January transfer window as an opportunity to bring in long-term talent. According to Transfermarkt, Disasi’s current market value is £22m which would be an amazing deal.
