The Premier League players who found out the hard way that the English top flight is a tough league…

Premier League giants Liverpool is set to announce new signing Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in a deal worth an initial £37 million. Gakpo’s dazzling performances in the recently concluded World Cup caught the eyes of Liverpool’s pragmatic manager Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool, who is desperate to fill the void left by Sadio Mane who parted ways for Bayern Munich earlier, wasted no time to snatch the youngster out of the grasp of rival Manchester United.

Liverpool currently in 6th position 5 points of the top four position will need Gakpo incredible goals scoring prowess to make a last ditch run for a top four finish. Gakpo scored 9 goals and made 12 assists in 14 appearances for PSV Eindhoven.

He also scored 3 goals at the 2022 World Cup. Is Liverpool on the verge of making the same mistake again? Will they prove the adage “not all that glitters is gold,” right?

Let us look at the top six players who failed miserably in the English Premier League after an amazing run at the World Cup.

6. Davor Suker (Real Madrid to Arsenal)
After scoring six times in seven games, the World Cup 1998 Golden boot winner Davor Suker joined Arsenal in 1999 from Real Madrid. He forged company with the likes of Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry and Kanu but found life difficult to get in Arsene Wenger’s starting 11.

He started brightly scoring on his debut but spent 12 frustrating months with 8 starts and playing second fiddle from the bench scoring 8 goals in 22 appearances. After failing to live up to expectations Suker moved to east London where he spent a season and a half with West Ham before heading to 1860 Munich.

Davor Suker later hung his boot up in 2003 and opened a Soccer Academy in Zagreb. Suker was named on the FIFA 100 list of the 125 Greatest Living Footballers, selected by Pele, the only Croatian on the list.
