Pedro Porro could join Tottenham in January as Conte looks for a new wingback

According to the Evening Standard, Tottenham is targeting 23-year-old Spanish wingback Pedro Porro as the North London club looks for an upgrade on the right flank.

Per multiple reports, Emerson Royal and Djed Spence have found themselves both on the outside looking in, in regard to their future at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Djed Spence has rarely featured this season and could be loaned out in January whilst Emerson Royal is no longer seen as a viable option at the right wingback position for Antonio Conte, per Dan Kilpatrick.

Pedro Porro has spent the last two seasons and a half with Sporting CP in Portugal after previously being under contract at Manchester City despite never playing a game for the English club.

Porro has started 8 LigaPro games this season for Sporting, picking up 4 assists and has also started 4 out of the 5 Champions League games he’s played in.

A scouting report from The Scouting App on Pedro Porro:

"The Spanish right-back is often tasked with unlocking the defensive faults of the opposition’s left-hand side and testing the backline with accurate crosses efforts into the box. Pedro Porro can be considered a very modern right-back, with the great ability to be a strong part of the offensive phase of the team."

This scouting report of Porro explains Tottenham’s interest in the wingback. Antonio Conte’s system relies on the wingbacks on both flanks to have an attacking flair to their game, highlighted by the addition of Ivan Perišić by Tottenham in the summer. Porro’s ability to cross dangerous balls into the final third will surely entice the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Pedro Porro’s current contract does not expire till 2025 and with Sporting CP looking to make a run in Europa League, there is little incentive for the Portuguese side to haggle with Tottenham over a price lower than his release clause of €45M.

Should Tottenham choose to activate the release clause, the signing would be the 4th most expensive arrival in the club’s history, surpassing Davinson Sánchez’s transfer.
