Liverpool are set to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in a potential deal worth £50 million

According to the official statement released by the Dutch outfit, Liverpool have trumped Manchester United to secure the services of Cody Gakpo. After both clubs have agreed on the transfer fee, the 23-year-old Netherlands international will travel to England to complete the medical.

Though the clubs have not reported the transfer fee, transfer journalists expect the sum to touch £50 million. According to sources, Liverpool will pay £37 million plus £13 million in add-ons to PSV Eindhoven to sign Gakpo.

The official statement read:

"PSV en Liverpool FC hebben een akkoord bereikt over de aanstaande transfer van Cody Gakpo.(Via: PSV Official webpage)PSV and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement on the upcoming transfer of Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old attacker will immediately leave for England where he will undergo the necessary formalities to complete the transfer"

Pundits had linked the versatile forward to join the Old Trafford outfit but Liverpool silently completed the deal for the player. Manchester United and Erik ten Hag will have to re-assess their strategy before the winter transfer window opens on January 1.

Cody Gakpo: A great steal or is the signing Liverpool needed at all costs?

Liverpool have struggled in the ongoing season as they find themselves outside the top four after 15 games. They are a point behind Manchester United with an extra game played and five points off the top four with a game in hand. The misfiring forwards have contributed heavily to their lackluster start to the season.

To address their attacking woes and fill the void left by Sadio Mane, Liverpool signed Darwin Nunez from SL Benfica in a deal worth €80 million. However, the signing has not panned the way Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool wanted. He has five goals in 11 games, but he has not performed well according to his xG metrics. He has an xG of 5.8 in the English top flight. The player has missed several easy chances and has become a laughing stock on social media. He has not been up to par according to his xG in the UEFA Champions League too.

Besides Darwin Nunez’s lackluster form, Liverpool are crippled without Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota. Both players are ruled out till late March and early February respectively, as the players have suffered setbacks in their injury rehabilitation. The lack of forwards has also prompted Liverpool to work under the radar and sign Cody Gakpo from PSV.
